The Best Way to Detox and Why High Sugar Juicing Isn’t Optimal

You don’t need to frost your tips, move to Hollywood and have custom juices strained through unicorn horns to to do a quality detox or cleanse. Your body naturally wants to detox, and with the right foods, herbs and mushrooms, it does a pretty good job. Depriving it doesn’t make it work better; supplying it with what it needs to do its job does. It’s like taking away a carpenter’s tools and telling him to build a house. And what some people might be describing as premature enlightenment during a juice cleanse, might in fact be a combination of a sugar high and simply cutting out the foods and drinks that make you feel awful in the first place.

How Do You Know You are Toxic?

How do you know if you may be toxic? Poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, chemical exposure at your occupation, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, stiffness in the morning, trouble sleeping and need caffeine to get through the day.

While it’s still a topic people try to avoid, constipation is the number #1 way to know. It’s pretty simple. Eliminate daily and you are detoxing. I have never promoted extreme cleanses based on strictly sugary juices to get results because you lose the fiber, which binds to toxins, lowers excess estrogen and holds your blood sugar and prevents constipation. If you are female and young, there is a good chance excess estrogen is an issue, while having low progesterone.

You also may find yourself with cavities and a thyroid problem like this woman. I recently worked with a juice company to correct these oversights and create low sugar juices with fiber and healthy fat for better results for this reason.

Also, people are simply not well enough to do extreme cleanses. What I mean by this is that so many people today have high toxic loads that are often released too quickly during a type of fast, and have sensitive blood sugar that cannot handle the drops that occur.

If you feel awful and someone tells you that “you’re just detoxing,” it is not a positive sign. It means it is too much for your body to handle. If you work and need to be able to handle mental activity and stress, then the stress hormones also produced during the fasting state is going to make you feel even worse by producing more cortisol and toxic byproducts.

Simple Detoxing

The approach I recommend is to simply take out all of the foods and drinks that make your filters work harder than they should, and include the foods and drinks that help it work the most efficiently. Here is the process you are encouraging with this simple process.

  • The kidneys have to process 200 quarts of blood to sift out 2 quarts of waste. Toxins that do not get eliminated in the urine end up in the blood. The kidneys need sufficient water daily.
  • The cells in the stomach only live for 5 days. Up to 80% of your immune system is in your digestive tract and is harmed mainly by sugar, gluten and antibiotics.
  • The cells in the skin have an estimated turnover of two weeks. When your internal filters are overloaded, skin problems arise.
  • Red blood cells live for 120 days carrying oxygen to organs before being sent to the spleen. The kidneys produce EPO, which stimulates the bone marrow to release red blood cells. If the kidneys are not healthy, they do not produce enough EPO. This can lead to anemia along with iron and folic acid deficiencies.
  • The liver cells have an estimated turnover rate of 300-500 days. It has to deal with environmental assaults, dietary assaults from sugar, alcohol and chemicals, hormonal assaults, and medications. The liver can completely regenerate, but it takes time and consistency.
  • The entire human skeleton is estimated to be turned over every 10 years. Take good care of your vehicle with exercises and a mineral rich diet, and it will take care of you for years.
  • The only pieces of the body that last a lifetime, on present evidence, seem to be the neurons of the cerebral cortex, the inner lens cells of the eye and perhaps the muscle cells of the heart. So take good care of your brain, eyes and heart!

Now, what happens when the factory starts getting backed up and bombarded, and the sick worker cells can’t efficiently get flushed? Disease.

The 3 Dietary and Lifestyle Detox Guidelines for 30 days

1. Cut out all grains, sugar, coffee, alcohol and sodas. Use Yerba Mate Royal or Dandyblend in the place of coffee.

Reduce all omega-6 fatty acids (factory farmed meat, factory farmed dairy and vegetable oils) and increase omega-3 foods including wild salmon, walnuts, flax seeds and chia seeds. Due to contamination, the fish to choose from is wild salmon, herring, sardines, mackerel, cod and crab. Poaching is the healthiest way to cook fish, eliminating any potential carcinogenic compounds created during cooking. Marinate meats as explained here.

Increase intake of broccoli, Brussels sprouts, artichoke, cauliflower, garlic, sauerkraut and leafy greens. Have your last meal at 6:00pm or earlier, and fast until the morning. 12-14 hours is optimal.

2. Leafy greens are the one exception I have for juicing to ensure high amounts of folate since most people simply do not get enough, especially when gene mutations are present. This won’t affect your blood sugar, and it will supply vitamins, minerals, enzymes and chlorophyl in therapeutic doses. For juicing greens, you want a masticating juicer, not a centrifugal one. The one I decided on was theOmega J8006.

3. Get consistent sleep of 7-8 hours a night and exercise 3-5 times a week (make sure you sweat).

The Best Detox Supplements

1. Mineral Rich Water

Water seems to simple right? But when you breakdown the depletion of minerals and toxicity of our regular water, it becomes your number #1 of deficiency or toxicity.

How do minerals play a part in detoxification? If are deficient in certain minerals, then heavy metals will take their place. For example, lead will take the place of calcium, cadmium will take the place of zinc, aluminum will take the place of magnesium, and nickel will take the place of manganese. Lead, mercury and cadmium are especially hard on the kidney and mental health.

Imagine this scenario: A male or female sweat a ton during their workouts and does not replenish with electrolytes or a mineral rich meal, wears antiperspirants that contain aluminum or takes antacids, eats lots of non-organic grains (grains have a higher uptake of cadmium) and drinks Muscle Milk which has been found to be high in cadmium. See how easily it can happen? Exercise and sweat are only part of the equation.

Magnesium is the single most effective supplement for constipation and metabolizing excess estrogen. It also increases ATP so cells have energy to kick out toxins, and along with aluminum, it will detoxify mercury, lead, cadmium, beryllium and nickel. Alfalfa purifies the blood, alkalizes the body and assists digestion. It has a deep taproot that supplies a plethora of minerals. I recommend using extra magnesium with my favorite Magnesium Citramatebest detox.

Mushroom Science Reishi Super Strengthbest detox

One of the most effective anti-cancer supplements for detoxifying the liver and promoting longevity. It has a 4,000 year history of being used for lowering allergies, hepatitis, nephritis, hypertension, arthritis, insomnia, bronchitis, asthma, ulcers and benefitting the heart.

3. C-Salts Buffered Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the most effective detoxifying and cleansing vitamins. It protects against aromatic polycystic hydrocarbons (high from pollution, grains, vegetable oils and charred food), is needed for GABA to lower glutamate (highly inflammatory from too much sugar, caffeine, MSG and deficiencies), and enhances natural killer cell activity for immunity.

What Foods Help Your Whole Body Detox?

Brain: Wild fish, pastured eggs, walnuts, avocados, chia seeds, flax seeds, antioxidants and medicinal mushrooms. The brain benefits from a consistent supply of nutrients and steady blood sugar. High blood sugar and low blood sugar affect it dramatically. The brain is also BFF with your intestines. When your stomach isn’t happy, neither is your brain. Fun fact: The same amount of serotonin is made in your brain is also made in your gut.

Heart: Wild salmon, avocados, sweet potatoes, chia seeds, flax seeds, almonds, walnuts, berries and all vitamin C rich food.

Lungs: Clean air, cordyceps mushrooms, avocados, brightly colored fruits and vegetables, wild salmon and flax seed.

Liver: Medicinal mushrooms, bitter greens like dandelion greens, artichoke, lemons, garlic, beets, kale and onion.

Intestines: All fruits, vegetables (raw, cooked and fermented) and homemade broth from bones. The vill which look like seaweed floating in water, and is responsible for nutrient absorption. When they get overloaded with sensitive foods like gluten and cow dairy, the villi get stomped on. This leads to holes in the gut with undigested food particles making their way into the blood and the body reacting by throwing them out through the skin (think skin rashes and psoriasis).

Spleen: The spleen is a lounge of reserved red blood cells, and according to Chinese Medicine, works best with warm, cooked foods that do not cause any extra work. I assume reggae music is playing in the spleen. Iced beverages and raw foods that are hard to break down strain the spleen which contributes to anxiety and excess worry.

Kidneys: Filtered water, Cordyceps mushrooms, avocados, blackberries, lemons, raspberries and watermelon. The adrenal glands rest on top of the kidneys, and can cause extreme havoc on your kidneys. Ever wonder why you have to keep peeing when you are nervous? It’s the adrenal glands saying “Hey! Drop everything you are doing, we gotta run!” Steady blood sugar helps keep the adrenals happy, instead of believing that famine has struck. Adaptogens are highly recommended for those with cortisol issues.

Pancreas: The pancreas is responsible for insulin, and is like the nervous office worker that doesn’t like a lot of folders piled on his desk. In this case, it’s too much sugar and carbohydrates. Coconut oil is unique for helping blood sugar in that it goes straight to the liver to be utilized for energy, giving the pancreas a water cooler break.

Skin: Chemical free anything that goes on your skin. What doesn’t get filtered by the body ends up on your skin. This is an indication that your filters are overloaded with toxins and bad bacteria. Focus on all your internal organs, and your skin will clear up. If you are female, take fish oil, b-vitamins, eliminate omega-6 fatty acids and sugar.  One product I have noticed works incredibly well for healthy skin is Pure Encapsulations Hair/Skin/Nails. The skin benefits from wild fish, coconut water, coconut oil, avocado, blueberries, raspberries, lemon juice, spinach, kale, almonds, sunflower seeds and walnuts.

If you are looking for green detox smoothies, look no further. I stumbled across this site and it had a lot of great ideas. Choose ones with cilantro for detoxing heavy metals, and add 1 Tbsp. of chia seeds and flax seeds for regularity.
